This study was concerned with the formation and color development of the spinel solid solution in CoO-MgO-Cr<sub>2</sub>O<sub>3</sub>-Fe<sub>2</sub>O<sub>3</sub>-TiO<sub>2</sub> system, and its application to colored glazes.<br>Specimens were prepared by calcining the oxide mixtures at 1400°C for 1h. The formation of spinel solid solution was examined by X-ray diffraction, the color was discussed by measuring the spectral reflectance, and the stability of the spinel in glazes was tested.<br>The results were summarized as follows:<br>(1) Formation of a continuous solid solution was confirmed by X-ray analysis.<br>(2) As the amount of Cr<sup>3+</sup> increased in MgO-Cr<sub>2</sub>O<sub>3</sub>-TiO<sub>2</sub> system, the color changed from white through leaf and grayish olive to beige, and absorption of Cr<sup>3+</sup> shifted towards the short wavelength region.<br>(3) An increase of Fe<sup>3+</sup> in MgO-Fe<sub>2</sub>O<sub>3</sub>-TiO<sub>2</sub> system, caused the color to change from strong orange through light brown to reddish brown.<br>(4) The color developed in MgO-Cr<sub>2</sub>O<sub>3</sub>-Fe<sub>2</sub>O<sub>3</sub>-TiO<sub>2</sub> system, ranged from brown through grayish brown to reddish brown.<br>(5) As the amount of Cr<sup>3+</sup> increased in CoO-MgO-Cr<sub>2</sub>O<sub>3</sub>-TiO<sub>2</sub> system, the color changed from strong greenish blue through dull bluish green to strong blue green, and the absorption of Cr<sup>3+</sup> and Co<sup>2+</sup> shifted towards the short wavelength region.<br>(6) An increase of Fe<sup>3+</sup> in CoO-MgO-Fe<sub>2</sub>O<sub>3</sub>-TiO<sub>2</sub> system, caused the color to change from strong blue green through grayish olive green and grayish brown to dark purplish gray.<br>(7) The colors ranging from grayish olive through dark grayish brown and dark reddish gray to dark gray developed in CoO-MgO-Cr<sub>2</sub>O<sub>3</sub>-Fe<sub>2</sub>O<sub>3</sub>-TiO<sub>2</sub> system.<br>(8) According to the results of colored glaze test, formation of new spinels was observed in magnesia glaze, and the original spinel was fairly stable in lime zinc glaze and lime glaze excepting spinels without Cr<sub>2</sub>O<sub>3</sub>. Speaking of shade of glazes, in latter two glazes grayish brown was dominant concerning MgO-Cr<sub>2</sub>O<sub>3</sub>-Fe<sub>2</sub>O<sub>3</sub>-TiO<sub>2</sub> system and dark bluish gray concerning CoO-MgO-Cr<sub>2</sub>O<sub>3</sub>-Fe<sub>2</sub>O<sub>3</sub>-TiO<sub>2</sub> system, and lime glaze produced generally lighter hue than lime zinc glaze.
新しいスピネル顔料開発の一環として, CoO-MgO-Cr<sub>2</sub>O<sub>3</sub>-Fe<sub>2</sub>O<sub>3</sub>-TiO<sub>2</sub>系につき, そのスピネル固溶体の生成と色調, 及びその陶磁器への適用を検討するために, 本実験を計画した. 各試料は, それぞれ酸化物を用い, 湿式で混合後, 1400℃で焼成した. X線分析の結果, 各試料は, 単一スピネルであることが分った. 色調は, CoOを含まない系で, 茶及びオリーブ系の呈色, CoOを含む系では, 青緑及び暗い灰系の深い呈色が得られた. また, 色釉試験の結果から, 従来から使用されている石灰亜鉛釉及び石灰釉で, CoOを含まない系で, オリーブ及び茶の呈色, CoOを含む系では, 青緑及び暗い灰系の光沢のある深い呈色が得られた. 以上の実験結果から, CoO-MgO-Cr<sub>2</sub>O<sub>3</sub>-Fe<sub>2</sub>O<sub>3</sub>-TiO<sub>2</sub>系スピネル固溶体は, 陶磁器用顔料として, 十分に応用できることが分った.
