- Summary, etc.
-
In the early 17th century, about a hundred castle-towns were constructed in Japan as the capitals of each feudal domain. Since the Meiji period, with the growth of each city, some have changed their spatial structure gradually, others have maintained their original shape, and social and spatial context. The critical findings are as follows; Firstly, the castle towns can be classified under five typical groups at the view of the way how the new urban structure, especially location of railway and its station, is integrated with the historical urban pattern. Secondly, a variety of urban problems have been basically affected by these five typical urban patterns.
