最上川水運の研究は､近年著しい成界を収め、商品流通の発達と輸送手段の変化および湊町酒田･大石田河岸の経済構造と機能が､かなり明確に把握されるようになった｡しかしながら、古来より最上川流域に集落を形成し、最上川水運と密接に結合しっつ生活を営んできた幾多の小村が､如何なる形で最上川水運とかかわりを保ってきたか､未だ実証的に充分究明されているとはいえないように思う。中でも､多くの難所を抱え米沢藩の蔵米や蔵苧の川下げを困難にした五百川峡谷一帯は、史料的制約が多く、米沢藩の専用水路｢松川｣とみなされ、あたかも最上川水運定法上､その堵外に位置していたかの感さえあり、不明確なまま今日を迎えている。最上川を利用した米沢藩の蔵米や蔵苧の川下げは、近世中期以降における商品流通の発達と、それによってもたらされた領主財政の窮乏打開の意図から生み出されたものであるが、これが｢松川｣沿いの五百川農民と最上川水運にもたらした影響は、大きかったのではないかと想像される。したがって、この小稿では、以上のことを念頭において、米沢藩の松川通最上川水運利用の変遷と､それが五百川農民に与えた影響を、可能な限り実証的に考察したいと思う｡
