はじめに　摩耶山は,その山頂付近から東側の斜面は,花尚岩類より構成されるが,西側の山麓一帯は,新第三紀の関川層(安山岩質の火砕岩を主体とし,その中に頁岩層が挟まれる)からなっている｡本報告はこの関川層が,いつ,どのようにしてできたかについて現地調査,ならびに花粉化石の組成から検討したものである｡その結果,関川層は,古くとも,1,900万年より後に,急激に生じた大地の割れ目(断裂)にできた深い湖の堆積物であり,その湖は約上600万年前に始まる海進で,海に変わるまで続いていたことが推定された｡こうした大地の割れ目は,日本列島が大陸から分離していく際に,引っ張られて生じた裂け目であると理解される。
