はじめに（抄）　我が国の第四系の最上部にクロボク土と呼ばれる土がある｡黒い色をして軟らかく､水はけが良く乾いても決して硬く固まらない土である｡この土は､地表に現れ､農業や林業の基盤となることから､主に､土壌学的な視点から研究されてきた｡そしてこの土は､火山灰を母材とし､そこに腐植が集積したものであると考えられてきた｡小林国夫(1967a,b) など少数の地質学者は､クロボク土が土壌であることに異議を唱え､堆積物であると主張した｡しかし､その後の土壌学の進展の中で､クロボク土は依然として､火山灰土壌とされているにもかかわらず､地質学的な検討はなされないままであった｡こうした状況に対して､異説に再び光を当て､地質学的な観点でクロボク土の研究を行なうものである｡
