はじめに　山形自動車道酒田線は,南北に伸びる東北自動車道から分かれ,奥羽山系を横切り,山形市を通過するものである.奥羽山系の中央部の横断は,すでに開通している笹谷トンネルが使用されるが,このトンネルの周辺は,山形側,仙台側ともに開設工事の際には多くの切り取り面が現れた. こうした露頭は,崩壊を避けるため,すぐに法面の保護工が施行され,地質を観察できる期間は限られていた.一時的にせよ観察できた露頭では,花尚岩類や新第三系が見られたほか,予想外に多くの第四紀の磯を主体とした地層が見られた.このような磯層は,段丘や崖錐の堆積物とは違った岩質や産状を示すものもあり,地質学的な対象として興味深く思われた.高速道路の供用が間近な今では, もう地質が観察できる露頭はない.したがって,この工事で得られた情報は,可能な限り公開しておく必要があろう.この報告は,滑川の右岸に開設された高速道路の切り取り法面で観察した地層に考察を加えたものである.その結果,ここの地層は,背後の雁戸山方面からの大崩壊による土塊の流出堆積物であることが判明した.こうした大崩壊は,奥羽山系の侵食史の中で最盛期の侵食の一つの表現であると位置付けた.この報告をするにあたり,現場の立ち入り調査をさせていただいた日本道路公団,並びに現場担当の諸会社の方々,及び現場で観察を共にされ,討論をしていただいた阿子島功,大場与志男,田宮良一,本田康夫の諸氏に御礼申し上げる．
