はじめに　2007年秋,山形市蔵王半郷地内(大鳥居の北)の蔵王温泉へ通ずる道路の改良工事に伴って長さ約100mにわたって良好な露頭が出現した.この場所は都市圏活断層図において,地形的に｢半郷活断層｣(八木ほか,2002)とされ,その境曲構造の及ぶ範囲の中にある(図1).したがって,境曲崖とされる部分の切開状況が観察できる場所であり,地質学的に｢半郷活断層｣を検討する好機でもあった.また,この区域の南部の甫坂地区では道路の切り取りによる露頭が出現し,地質が知られているが,この区域の地質については不明であった.この法面(露頭)はすぐに保護されて現在は見ることができないが,被覆前に,地質とその構造について詳しく観察することができた.その結果を記録写真とともに報告し,この露頭にまつわる活断層や地質,さらに応用地質などに関する所見を述べておきたい.なお,本露頭観察に同行され,種々の議論を頂いた本田康夫氏にお礼申し上げる.
