本研究では、1950年代の沖縄の戦後復興を中心にしながら、復帰前のアメリカの軍政下における沖縄の政治・社会・文化の発展ないし変容について総合的に解明した。1950年代の基地依存的な経済復興は、軍政下の住民自治権の脆弱性、基地を中心とした都市化の歪み、沖縄本島内における、また本島と離島とのあいだの不均等な社会発展など、さまざまな歪みをもたらした。本研究では、それらのメカニズムや全体的な関連性を明らかにした。
研究概要(英文)：In this study, I considered the post-war restoration and economic development in Okinawa in the 1950’s and political, social and cultural changes of Okinawa under the military rule of USA before the reversion of Okinawa to Japan. The economic development in Okinawa that depended upon the presence of US military bases brought about the serious consequences including the political vulnerability of the people under military rule, urbanization around the bases and its pathologies, and unbalanced socio-economical developments not only inside on Okinawa island but also between Okinawa island and other solitary islands. This study explained the social and historical mechanism of such developments and the interconnections between these phenomena.
