フィリピン、米国などに一般的に見られる周囲を塀で囲み出入り口を警備員が管理する戸建住宅地を、本論では囲郭居住システム（EHS)と呼んでいる。この形態の住宅地は、世界的な治安悪化などを背景に、近年20年間に格段にその数が増大するとともに、分布も拡大している。本研究は、その近年の変化の実態に着目し、それを文献レビューするとともに、フィリピン国内及び国際的な分布の状況について研究するものである。実態調査にあたっては、学生の卒業研究の課題とするとともに、フィリピン国内の研究機関のスタッフにも協力を求めてデータ収集に成功した。また、国内の先行研究者にも接触して参考になるコメントを得た。２０年ぶりに再会した研究の初年度であったが、期待以上の成果を上げることができた。今後は収集したデータの分析を進めて、その結果を論文にまとめるとともに、居住環境等EHS内での生活像にかかわる研究にも取り組みたい。
