長崎県は我が国でも屈指の文化遺産を誇る県であり，特に国連世界遺産への推薦が決定した「長崎と天草地方の潜伏キリシタン関連遺産（旧：長崎の教会群とキリスト教関連遺産）」は世界的に見ても稀有な文化遺産である．一方で，これらの文化遺産は離島を含む県内に広く分散しているため，アクセスは必ずしも良くはない．そこで筆者らは，これらの文化遺産の姿，佇まい，環境などを超高精細デジタルデータ化しバーチャルリアリティ(VR)技術を用いて再現する手法を開発かつ実施し，その成果をインターネットを通じて無償公開することで，より広く長崎県の文化遺産を知ってもらうとともに，現地に足を運べない人にも楽しみ，あるいは学術的探究の機会を与えることを提案した．
