日本の生活習慣病の一つである糖尿病は進行すると合併症リスクが高くなり、QOLの低下や健康寿命の延伸を妨げるリスクファクターの一つといえる。糖尿病は症状の軽いうちから栄養管理などの介入ができればQOLの維持、低下の抑制が可能であるため、進行度によって鋭敏に変化する代謝産物などが見つかれば、予備軍の早期発見や糖尿病治療への介入をする上で、早期の栄養指導、治療法の変更などに役立つと思われる。そこで、本研究では現行の糖尿病診断に用いられるHbA1c数値を基準にして、HbA1cの低値群と高値群に分け、糖尿病患者血清を用いたメタボローム解析により、2群間で違いのある代謝産物を調べ、2-ホスホグリセリン酸（または3-ホスホグリセリン酸、2/3-PGA）をバイオマーカーの候補として検出した。
