Note (General): シンボリック相互行為論(SI)の特長・達成や限界・弱点を見極めながら、その視点や方法を現代社会分析にどのように活用していくかという問題関心から、N.K.デンジンのSI批判と刷新案を取り上げ、その批判的評価を通して、SIを今後に生かす方向性を考察する。「コミュニケーションと文化への批判的視点」の欠如という指摘などデンジンの批判には肯ける点が多く、また、SIのアイデンティティに固執せず他の理論方法との組み合わせを前提に質的研究の有力なツールとしてSIを生かそうという発想にも賛同できる。しかし、彼の提案する文化批判の研究プログラムや彼自身の最近の仕事には、相互行為論の特長が必ずしも生かされていない面が見られる。筆者としてはその路線よりも、彼のSI批判やカルチュラル・スタディーズの発想を組み入れつつ、意味の変容や創発を探る解釈主義的で相互行為論的なフィールド研究の展開を目指す方が、これまでの蓄積を踏まえつつSIを今後に生かす道としてふさわしいと考える。
