本稿は、米国における日本語学習者の数を急増させる三つの要因である(1 )米国の第二次世界大戦の参戦、( 2 )1980年代の日本の高度経済成長、( 3 )米国における2000年代以降の日本文化に対する関心を通して米国における日本語教育の歴史を考察する。当時の日本語の教育教科書や学術論文・書籍、公文書、当時の新聞記事・書籍、当時の日本語学習者の説明・インタビュー、統計資料など様々な量的・質的データ及び一次・二次資料を踏まえ、筆者は上記の( 1 )から( 3 )を中心に、それらを1戦時日本語ブーム、( 2 )経済日本語ブーム、( 3 )文化日本語ブームに分けた。その結果、戦時日本語ブームと経済日本語ブームは日本と米国との「競争意識」に基づきブームが起きたという点が共通していると言える。戦時日本語ブームは軍事的な競争、経済日本語ブームは経済的な競争に基づく。文化日本語ブームは、最初の二つのブームとは異なり、日本語学習者の急増の動機が、軍事や経済競争のような要因ではなく、文化の異なる人々と交流することを通じて生活を豊かにするような要因によるものであるとも考えられる。最後に、なぜこのような異なるブームが発生したか、またこれからの米国における日本語教育の動向に関する考察も踏まえてまとめる。
