Note (General): 本稿の目的は，日本列島西部の縄文時代晩期後葉～弥生時代前期に属する初期箱式石棺の型式分類を行い，その時空間的様相を検討した結果をふまえ，設定された型式の祖型，受容をめぐる問題を論じることである。先行研究では，各研究者によって異なる基準を用いた分類案が提示されていたが，その分類過程や，分類単位としての妥当性は十分に示されていなかった。そこで筆者は，型式設定にあたり，属性分析を用いることで，分類過程を明示するとともに，安定した分類単位の析出に努めた。結果として，「薄壁式」と「厚壁式」の二大別型式が設定され，前者はさらにⅠ～Ⅲ式に細別された。これらの型式を成立させた背景についても，型式と被葬者に関する情報との関係をみて検討した。つづいて，設定された型式の存続時間幅を，地域・遺跡ごとに検討した。最後に，以上の分析結果をふまえ，各型式の祖型と，各地域での受容に関する問題について論じた。
