本研究では、生後6-7ケ月の乳児を対象に、被験者内計画による2つの実験をおこなった。実験1では、ボールの動きの原因の推論について検証し、実験2では、他者の行為の目標の推論について検証した。その結果、実験1でのパフォーマンスと、実験2でのパフォーマンスの間に関連がみられることが示された。つまり、ボールの動きの原因についての認識がみられた乳児は、そのような認識が見られなかった乳児よりも、他者の行為の目標の推論を示す行為を多く産出したことが示唆された。
Two experiments examined 6-to 7-month-old infants' recognition of physical causality and psychological causality and relation between them. In Experiment 1, I examined infants' recognition of causality in movement of a ball. Then, infants looked longer an event in which a ball started to move without external force than an event in which a ball was caused to move. In Experiment 2, I examined whether infants recognize an actor's goal or not when they witnessed his failed reaching. Moreover, infants who showed preference for unnatural event in Experiment 1 performed better in Experiment 2 than infants who did not show such preference in Experiment 1.
