本研究は、戦後日本社会の中心的なマスメディアであるテレビが、人々の時間意識の編成に与えた影響を分析し、その社会学的な意味を考察するものである。具体的には、1950年代に行われた地方都市の小学校で実施されたテレビ受容調査の読解、および当時、より大規模に行われた子どもテレビ視聴調査とそれに伴う各種論考を言説として分析し、テレビがもたらす生活時間の変容に対する当時の認識を明らかにした。それにより、テレビをナショナルな時間意識の統合装置として論じてきた既存の社会学的なメディア研究に対して、テレビが多層的な時間意識を生み出した可能性を示した。
