本研究の目的は、ブルジョワ市民階級の台頭を背景に、19世紀の音楽市場でオペラ編曲が果たした役割を明らかにすることである。供給者＝流通業者＝需要者のすべてに利をもたらしたオペラ編曲の生産・流通・消費のサイクルを調査することで、家庭、サロン、演奏会という社会のあらゆる場で、編曲がオリジナル作品にも増して市民階級の音楽生活の中心に位置していたこと、そしてまた、音楽市場におけるこうしたオペラ編曲の存在が、彼らの音楽文化の興隆と発展に大きく貢献していたことを明らかにする。2018年度はまず、リストが四半世紀以上の長きにわたり取り組んだ、友人ワーグナーのオペラ編曲全15曲を調査対象とし、それらｎ編曲手法の変遷を追った。日本ワーグナー協会編、『ワーグナーシュンポシオン』（アルテスパブリッシング、2018）に、「ワーグナー＝リストのオペラ編曲」、16-32頁を寄稿し、リストが自身の社会的立場の転換を機に編曲の手法を変化させて「auf meiner Art」（独自の手法）の度合いを強めていった点を指摘した。また、1830～40年代のヨーロッパ音楽界を席巻したグランド・オペラが、原曲のかたちとしての劇場上演よりも、むしろピアノ用編曲を通して、家庭、演奏会、サロンなど、ブルジョワ市民が出入りする場で大量に消費されていた実態を考察した。この点に関する論考は、澤田肇ほか編『《悪魔のロベール》とパリ・オペラ座――19世紀グランド・オペラ研究』（上智大学出版、2019年）、第I部第5章「グランド・オペラとピアノ編曲――近代市民社会におけるオペラの流通」、118-140頁に掲載された。
