近年の歴史学の傾向（メタヒストリー，グローバル・ヒストリーなど）にキャッチアップできるデザイン史学として，個別の事例に基づいた研究は蓄積されつつある．しかしそれを総体として統括できる視座は，まだ提供されていない．おそらくその結果として，美術家にとっての美術史，建築家にとっての建築史のようには，デザイナーにデザイン史が頼られていない側面がある．地方都市に設置されたミュージアムを焦点に，グローバル─ナショナル─ローカルという軸から，この視座を形成しようという試みである．
