本稿の目的は，監査人の継続監査年数と財務諸表監査の質との関係を検証することである。具体的には，財務諸表監査の質を会計発生高の質で代理し，これと監査人の継続監査年数との関係を調査している。監査人の継続年数に関しては，特に，7年を超える期間同一クライアント企業に対して監査業務を行っているのかどうかを1つの尺度として設定している。これは，現在行われている規制の継続年数と合致するものであり，本稿は現行の規制に対する1つの示唆を提供するものである。分析の結果，監査人の継続監査年数が7年を超える場合，会計発生高の質が改善する傾向にあることが明らかとなった。また併せて，これまで先行研究によって指摘されてきた監査報酬の多寡と会計発生高の質との関係に，監査人の継続監査年数がどのような影響を及ぼすのかを検証した。監査人の継続年数を加味した場合，先行研究が指摘するような監査報酬の規模の増大とともに会計発生高の質が低下するという関係は確認できなかった。当該分析結果によって，監査報酬という単一の要因だけでなく，監査人とクライアント企業との関係を代理する複数の要因を同時に検討することの必要性が示唆された。
