1990 年代後半の規制緩和を受け、日本の保険業界においても新規参入と既存保険会社の再編成が加速した。その結果、大規模保険会社や実質的に生損保を兼営する保険グループが数多く誕生したが、本稿はこれらの経営統合の効果を明確に評価することを目的とする。確率的フロンティア生産関数を用いて計測した経営統合効果は、次の3点である。① 事業費の圧縮や販売チャンネルの多様化など保険会社の効率化と消費者利便の向上に貢献。② 損害保険業界の経営統合は大規模統合が効率性を押上げたのに対し、中規模統合は逆に効率性を押下げ。③ 生損保兼営グループという観点からは、生命保険会社が主体となったグループの効率性が高い。損害保険会社主体のグループは個人年金の拡販で売上効率は上昇するものの、利益効率は逆に悪化。効率性の改善はいまだ十分といえず、今後も日本の保険市場の成熟化を背景に今後も分野を超えた経営統合が見込まれる。
