日本は保険業が最も発達した国の一つであるが、1990 年代以降のバブルの清算に伴う金融市場の混乱やマクロ経済環境の悪化などにより、生命保険業界は長期の停滞と調整期に入ることになった。本論文では、DEA （Data Envelopment Analysis）を用いて、1998 年度から2008 年度の日本の生命保険会社の効率性の変化を技術効率、純技術効率、そして規模効率を推計することにより、計測しようとするものである。分析の結果、厳しい環境の中でも日本の生命保険会社は効率性の上昇基調を確保したことが判明した。また、この時期同時に進んだ保険業法の改正などの規制緩和は外資系生保の市場シェアの拡大の誘因となったが、その背景に優れた純技術効率の改善があった。このような日本のバブル崩壊後の生命保険産業の状況や各社の経営努力は、今後の中国の生命保険業の健全な成長性確保や保険監督への大きな示唆となると考えられる。
