1990年代初頭に世界経済はグローバル化（一体化）とローカル化（地域化）が同時に進む時代に入った。特定の地域において、自由貿易協定（Free Trade Agreement、以下FTAと略す）の締結が数多く見られるようになり、その中で貿易自由化の動きは急速に進展することとなった。2000年代に入るとその動きは加速し、2012年9月末の世界のFTAの数は398（JETRO把握分のみ）にものぼり、WTOの多くの加盟国は少なくとも一つのFTA或いは他の地域間貿易の協定に加盟している。しかしながら、世界の一極をなす東アジアのFTAの構築はそれ以外の地域に比べて遅れており、大きな枠組みとしてはアジアにおいては、ASEAN（東南アジア諸国連合）の自由貿易協定しか存在していない。近年、国際社会や国際関係分野の研究者は自由貿易協定のいわば「空白地帯」となっている日中韓FTAへの関心を高めている。先行研究においても、日本、韓国、中国それぞれの研究者の研究が存在する。しかし、これらの研究は、経済的な側面、或いは政治・歴史の観点から日中韓FTAの可能性やその経済効果を主に理念的に論じており、計量的に捉えた3国の貿易構造を基礎に「経済」と「政治」の両面から日中韓FTAを考察した研究は見られない。本稿は、まず、3国の貿易構造を計量的に分析した上で、日中韓FTAの直面する課題とその実現可能性を総合的に分析する。
