This paper presents the results of a small-scale study of international students’perceptions of their academic and non-academic experiences in Japan. It explores the generalissues that face international students in Japan and considers several dimensions in relation to theinitial stages of international student life in Japan, such as the students’ reasons for studying inJapan, the admission process, financial issues, Japanese language ability, accommodation issues,culture shock, part-time employment, friendships and the students’ perception of the Japanesereaction to their presence. The study concludes that the academic experiences of internationalstudents highlight particular deficiencies in the Japanese higher education system, such as poorteaching methods and inadequate graduate supervision; whereas the students’ non-academicexperiences raise the wider issues of the cost of living in Japan as well as prejudice anddiscrimination.
