通常の動詞文では、動作主はガ格、対象はヲ格で表される（太郎が英語を話す）。これを可能構文に変換すると、経験者（元の動作主）がニ格で表示されることがある（例：太郎に英語が話せる）。しかし母語話者にとって、「太郎に英語が話せる」という文は、許容度が低い。この文を例えば「太郎にはこの問題が解ける」と改変すれば、許容度が高まる。それでは、どのような条件のときに、このニ格主語の許容度が高まるのだろうか。この問題について本稿では、母語話者へのアンケート調査をもとに考察を行った。その結果、単文では対象の焦点化・経験者の主題化が、複文では対象の焦点化・対照的NP の存在が鍵であることが分かった。本稿は次に、ニ格主語に特有の表現効果について論じた。ニ格主語は「意志の非関与」というニュアンスを持つ。そのようなニュアンスが、控え目あるいは丁寧という表現効果を生み出す。
