『万葉集』には多彩な歌人がいるが、安貴王と市原王の父子は、生没年すら知られない、いわば無名の存在である。本稿は、この二人の王に注目して、『万葉集』の歌を素材にしながら、それぞれの人物像について考察したものである。安貴王は、禁制とされた采女との恋によって、出世の道を閉ざされた。また、この恋は、妻の紀女郎との間にも悲劇を生んで、王は不遇の時代が続いたと考えられる。子の市原王は、そうした父に向けて、幸いを祈る歌を詠み、また独り子の侘しさを嘆く歌を詠んだ。市原王は、写経所の舎人として、仏教関連の仕事に精励することで、政治的な存在感を示した。その結果、一時的に父の安貴王と官位が並ぶという事態が出来した。さらに市原王には、湯原王や大伴家持との交友関係が窺える歌があり、『万葉集』の最後尾を飾る歌人の一人でもあった。しかし、恵美押勝の乱に巻き込まれたのか、それ以後には消息が知られなくなった。
