本稿は、まず書き言葉と話し言葉における現代日本語の撥音の使用実態を明らかにすべく、BCCWJ と名大会話コーパスをそれぞれ用いて調査した。そして、両コーパスにおける多種多様な撥音形式の分布を示し、両者の異同について考察を行った。その結果、両コーパスは共通して「肯定」「否定」別の用例がとりわけ多いほか、ともに近畿方言に由来する撥音形式が多く含まれていることが分かった。このことから撥音指導に関しては「準標準語」の視点を看過できないと主張する。また、BCCWJ においては助動詞のムに由来する撥音が2 位にランクインしており、日本語学習者を対象に読解の指導を行う際、通時的観点を（部分的に）取り入れる必要があろう。最後に「肯定」「否定」に「助動詞ム」が絡む一段活用に下接する撥音を、学習者にとっての最難点として取り上げ、学習者の視点から指導への提言を行った。
