目前，学界和政界有关东亚一体化的讨论大多以民族国家为出发点，并以在此基础上形成的“方法论上的民族主义”来分析亚洲区域发展的成就、问题和挑战。文章提出两个主要观点：第一，民族国家框架在分析东亚地区的政治经济发展中依然不可替代，但它已经不足以全面解释那些与经济迅速发展共存的现象，包括人口、实践、理念、和资本的跨界流动所带来的深刻转变。文章提出，地理与文化意义上的“跨界亚洲”概念可作为可供考虑的选择之一，以填补民族国家导向的主流研究文献所忽视的空白。第二，通过超越传统的国家与社会二分法，以及国家主义和制度主义之间的严格的理论分野，文章将跨国网络和治理作为连接这些分野的桥梁，并将之作为破解东亚政治经济发展新动力的分析工具。在与跨国网络的广泛和多层互动中，网络化国家的特质开始发挥日益重要的作用，它与发展型国家共存，通过各种协商机制影响或制约民族国家的国内外事务。
