本文作为努力获得“东亚地域社会中通用的历史认识”当中的一环，主要论述的是这一过程中最大的阻碍——如何对待本国历史中的帝国性。这里所说的帝国性（empireness）指的是帝国形成、维持、扩张的倾向以及由此引起的客观形象。对本国历史的帝国性有自省史观和自慢史观这两种看法。所谓东亚地域史，与单一的本国历史不同，在超越国境的同时也应该可以在各国家通用，所以作为地域史的东亚史，更应该从真挚省察的角度出发去看待本国历史中的帝国性。怀着这种想法，笔者比较考察了一直以来在本国历史中被视作当然的几点问题（对应性防御轮的近代史认识体系，帝国梦和帝国化的起点，华夷论的历史用语等）是如何呈现在地域史中的。为此，笔者比较了近来中日韩三国出版的东亚史著作，比较对象的文本有杨军、张乃和主编的《东亚史：从史前至20世纪末》（长春出版社，2006），三谷博、并木赖寿、月脚达彦编的《给成人的近现代史：19世纪编》（东京大学出版会，2009），柳镛泰、朴晋羽、朴泰均《共同阅读的东亚近现代史：1・2》（首尔：创批，2010-2011）。自慢史观把加害邻国的膨胀指向帝国性看作是荣耀国威的彰显，笔者希望可以藉此把这种自慢史观从自省史观的角度中呈现。
