Note (General): 本論文の課題は京都綿子ル社の経営実態の解明を通じて、明治期の繊維企業における垂直・水平統合政策の意義を検討することにある。明治30年代にもっぱら不況対策として紡績専業企業が合併と買収によて織布部門を統合し、兼営織布が本格化したことは広く知られている。これに対し本論文では織布、染色加工、起毛整理を起点に紡績工程を垂直統合し兼営織布化した京都綿子ル社の事例を検討した。綿ネル（綿フランネルの略称）とは毛織物の一種であるフランネルに類似する表面を起毛した加工綿布のことであるが、京都綿子ル社は綿ネルの機械捺染を行い、紡績、織布、染色、起毛の全工程の一貫生産を実現した企業である。1895年に設立された京都綿子ル社はヨーロッパから染色加工や起毛整理に関する技術を積極的に移植したが、その中で綿ネルの品質問題、未熟な捺染技術、銅ローラ機械彫刻法の習得と解決すべき数多くの課題に直面した。本論文では京都綿子ル社がいかにしてこれらの課題を解決していったかを明らかにした。特に注目すべきことは京都綿子ル社が京都紡を買収し垂直統合をすすめ、綿糸を自給化し、綿ネルの品質を向上させたことで、これが多色捺染綿ネルの発売につながり、利益の源泉となった。さらに日露戦争後に綿ネル業の競争が激化する中で、京都綿子ル社は綿ネルに依存する経営体質から脱却すべく、さらなる多様化と高度化をめざし水平統合を行った。この政策を支える安定的な資金調達に失敗したものの、京都綿子ル社が行った先駆的な取組は日本の機械捺染業の勃興に多大な貢献を果たした。
