今日，天安門正面に掲げられた毛沢東の巨大な肖像画や中国紙幣（人民幣）に刻印される唯一の人物としての毛沢東は，彼が現代中国政治において中共による一党統治を正当化するシンボルと位置づけられていることを示している。しかしながら，これらが含意する「毛沢東思想」は，1945 年の歴史決議と党大会によって定義されかつ彼の存命中に存在していたそれと同じではない。76 年10 月，華国鋒らに逮捕・拘束された四人組（文革派）が掲げていたのは「毛沢東思想」であったし，華国鋒政権もまた「毛主席が行ったすべての決定を断固として維持し，毛主席によるすべての指示に一貫して従う」と主張した。さらに「実践が真理を検証する唯一の基準である」としてこの「二つのすべて」を批判した鄧小平もまた，79 年3 月，社会主義，プロレタリア独裁，共産党の指導とともに「マルクス=レーニン主義と毛沢東思想」を「四つの基本原則」に指定した。81 年6 月，中共11 期6 中全会「建国以来の党の若干の歴史問題についての決議」を採択，①文化大革命（文革）は建国以来もっとも甚大な挫折・損失であった，②文革は毛沢東が発動・指導した，③毛沢東が犯した誤りは偉大な革命家が犯した誤りであった，と規定した。結果，「毛沢東思想」は，文化大革命に結実する毛沢東自身の左よりの誤った観点を排除し，かつ「毛沢東同志の科学的著作に集中的に概括される」中共の集団的営為の結晶であるとする再定義に到達する。本稿は，1976 年4 月の天安門事件から1982 年12 月の憲法採択にいたる「毛沢東思想」再定義の過程，ならびにその背景をなす日中関係を，日本中国友好協会系の日本語月刊誌『中国研究』が行った同時代観察を素材とて考察る。
