Note (General): 本稿では，1980～2016年度の37カ年に亘る都道府県パネルデータを用いて，公立小中学校の児童生徒あたり消費的支出総額，人件費，教育活動費，管理費，補助活動費，所定支払金の各費目について規模の経済性の存在を検証した。費用関数推定の結果，消費的支出総額，人件費，管理費，補助活動費（小学校のみ），所定支払金について規模の経済性の存在が認められ，児童生徒数1%の減少による単位コストの増加率は人件費よりも管理費や所定支払金で，また小学校より中学校で相対的に大きいことが示唆された。規模の経済性は，児童生徒数の増減に附随して変化する学級規模の影響を制御した後でも認められ，少子化で児童が減るなかにあって，学級規模の維持や拡大は財政効率の向上という面に寄与しうることが示唆された。また，2001年度の義務標準法改正後，各都道府県では学級編成の弾力化が進んだことに伴い支出が増え，規模の経済性は大きくなる傾向にあることが分かった。
