Note (General): Common sense is a dynamic concept and it is natural that our (statistical) common sense lags behind the development of statistical sci?ence. What is not so easy to understand is why common sense lags behind as much as it does. We conduct a survey among Japanese students and try to understand why some probabilistic and statistical questions that baf?fled great minds a few hundred years are now easy, while other (relatively straightforward) questions are not only difficult but even counter-intuitive.
確率論や統計学は現在重要視されているにもかかわらず、人々に十分に波及しているとは言えない。ビックデータの普及やデータ分析の発展によって、確率論や統計学の重要性は増してきている一方、確率論や統計学は一般的に難しい分野であると認識されている。その原因は三つ考えられる。一つ目に、歴史が浅いことが挙げられる。数学は紀元前から歴史があるが、確率論はまだ若い学問であり、十六世紀頃から発展している。統計学はさらに若い学問であり、十九世紀頃から発展している。二つ目に、思考方法の異質さが挙げられる。人々が生活をするうえで、リスクや確率に関する知識が必ずしも必要ではなかったため、学習してこなかったという可能性が考えうる。三つ目に、教育が不足していることが挙げられる。数学は基本科目であるが、確率や統計学はそうではない。本研究は、確率論や統計学は人々にどこまで浸透しているのかを検証するために、大阪大学の学生を対象にオンライン調査を実施し、統計学と一般的に備わっている知識が乖離しているのかを分析した。分析の結果、簡単な確率的な問題は統計学に関する訓練を受けていない人でも回答することができることが明らかになった一方、難しい確率的な問題は回答者の経歴や能力にかかわらず回答が困難であることも明らかになった。これらの結果は、確率論や統計学への理解がいまだ不足していることを示している。
