Note (General): 本稿は、日本のある地方自治体における全小中学校とそれらの生徒に関する 5 年分のパネルデータを用いて、児童生徒の成績に対する学級規模効果の有無を検証することを目的としている。分析は、まずパネル推定により児童生徒の個人効果を統制した形で行い、次に、学級規模が成績等に応じて決定されている可能性を考え操作変数法による推定を行う。また、データ全体を使った場合だけでなく、コーホートを追った分析や社会経済変数を取り入れた分析も試みる。結果、いくつかの推定においては、学級規模が大きくなると成績に負の影響を及ぼすことが観察されたが、それが全ての学年や科目で一貫して観察されるというわけではないことも明らかになった。学年、科目、生徒を取り巻く環境等により学級規模効果が異なる可能性が示された。
