本研究は、都市型教育行政系老人大学の一例として兵庫県西官市老人大学を、都市型福祉系老人大学の一例として大阪府老人大学をそれぞれ取り上げ、両老人大学受講者に対する同様な内容の質問紙調査や職員へのインタビュー、資料分析などにより、それぞれの老人大学の組違点と共通点を明らかにし、もって都市型老人大学の社会的機能をさぐったものである。今回の研究から得られた知見などは以下の通りである。1 西宮市老人大学に比べて、大阪府老人大学への受講後の評価は、そのイメージ、満足度、感想、できた友人数などから判断して、人間関係の再編の場としてより機能していることが示唆された。受講期間中に、新しい友人関係を構築できた者のほうが受講後の評価でポジティヴな者が多かった。2 受講期間1年の大阪府老人大学と異なり、西宮市老人大学では、継続年数が長い者ほど老人大学での学習への姿勢という部分で、ポジティヴな評価の比率が高かった。また大阪府老人大学に比べると、教養科目を中心とする学習内容への評価が高かった。3 以上の点などから、教育行政系老人大学と福祉行政系老人大学との間に、受講者の意識構造の差がうかがわれた。4 一方、以下のような機能的にみた共通点も示された。(1)老人大学への評価の男女差の問題。男性受講者の多くが、退職後の余暇時間の有効利用として学びの活用を考えているのに対し、女性受講者の多くは、健康と仲間づくりのために参加し、交流の場を豊かにしようとしていた。(2)エイジングの視点から受講者の意識を考えた時、60代と70代以上とでは受講意識に差がうかがわれた。すなわち、60代の者の多くが、退職などによる高齢期への移行における学びを位置づけていたのに対し、70代以上の者は、より学びに内在する価値をさぐっているようであった。5 したがって、こうしたジェンダーやエイジングの視点を内包しつつ、学びによる老後のネットワークの再構築をしていくところに、老人大学の社会的機能がうかがわれるということになろう。
