移民の国であるアメリカ合衆国では、国民の統合をもっとも重要な課題とする一方、さまざまな人種、民族集団の文化への尊重を基礎とした多文化・多民族共生・共存の政策、および活発な多文化主義論争が展開されている。そこでこの研究は、この論争の議論をアジア系移民博物館の設立の経緯および展示などを通じて考察する。具体的には、アメリカ合衆国におけるアジア系移民博物館の設立過程と展示を中心に、国民統合のあり方および多文化社会の構築の実態を解明することを目的としている。アメリカ合衆国におけるアジア系移民の独自のアイデンティティの形成および変容の歴史過程を総合的に分析することにより、現在社会に存在するさまざまな人種・民族・宗教などの文化的な諸価値が、いかに公正で平和的に共存できるかを解明することが可能であろう。
This research project is designed to examine the social-economictransformation of Asian Americans in the United States. It focuses on the roles of Asian Americans, particularly Chinese and Japanese Americans in the construction of multicultural America in the post-World War II era.
