Note (General): SARSの衝撃(21世紀) : ほぼ一年半前の冬から春にかけて, 新聞の紙面を賑わしたのは, 謎の病気SARS(重症急性呼吸器症候群)であった。SARSは, 中国の南部を発生地として香港, さらに台湾・シンガポール・ベトナムといった近隣地域, 遠くはカナダ, アメリカ, ヨーロッパまで, 感染の爪が伸びた。2003年8月初旬までの累計で916人の死者を数えて, 昨夏には収束した。結果的には, 日本では一人の患者も出なかったし, SARSの恐怖は杞憂に終わったかに見える。だが, SARSが再発するかもしれないという危惧は依然として存在する。筆者は, SARSへの恐怖が最も喧伝されたとき, かつて猛威を振るった「スペイン風邪」のことを想起した。後にふれるように, 1918年に世界的な流行となったこのインフルエンザは, 世界疫病史においても稀にみる大惨事となったが, 人類はそうした悪夢の再来を完全に否定できるところにはまだいない。SARSの正体はコロナ・ウイルスであることが判明しているが, 空気感染があるか否かなど, 感染のあり方について未だ不明な点も残っている。しかし, 患者との接触が感染につながることは明白である。したがって, 検疫や防疫という感染者の移動を監視し管理する古典的な公衆衛生の手法が, 改めて脚光を浴びた。……
