This study aimed to exam the predictive power of Technique Feature Analysis (TFA) framework for predicting vocabulary learning task effects. The tasks were( a)“reading with meaning selecting,”(b)“reading with meaning writing,” and (c)“reading comprehension with marginal glosses(control).” And the vocabulary learning tasks in Japanese reading comprehension that had different rankings based on the TFA framework. Participants were 57 Chinese university students majoring in Japanese. They were assigned to one of the three tasks. To measure initial vocabulary learning immediately after the tasks, the First language (L1) to Second language (L2) translation test and the form recognition test were administered. The L1-L2 translation test results showed that the task( b) group had the highest mean score of all. They were followed by the task (a) group and the control group. And the results for the form recognition test showed that the mean score of task (a) group was higher than those of the other groups. The findings revealed that TFA may be a better predictor in incidental vocabulary learning of knowledge of form-meaning connection. And the findings also indicated that the five elements of TFA are not the only indexes for measuring the effectiveness of vocabulary tasks, but that the type of vocabulary task processing, type of vocabulary test should also be considered.
