まず『扶桑略記』研究史を概観した後、その伝本の伝来形態についての整理を行ない、そのある種の「いびつさ」から、新訂増補国史大系所収本文を院政期段階のテクストとして安易に利用することの危惧を表明した。その上で、古写本が伝来する巻に限って、『扶桑略記』の歴史叙述の方法を検討し、特定人物の伝記類に偏りを持たせながら叙述する点を指摘、殊に道昭・行基・智光・役行者の各伝記の関与・構造を明確化し、それは対外交渉史を意識しようとするゆえのものであるととりあえずは結論づけた。
