『人物管見』は同時代において新しい人物論として受容されていた。それは、内容的な面で従来の人物論と異なるものであったことと共に、人物論をめぐる言説を蘇峰が提示し、その影響圏において『人物管見』が読まれたためでもあった。また、山路愛山は蘇峰の人物評論の方法を文学史に援用していた。さらに、民友社の言説においては、史論や人物評論と文学・小説を差異づける複数の分割線が形作られていた。
