- 第3回国際数学・理科教育調査または国際数学・理科教育動向調査(いずれも通称はTIMSS)の実施機関として、我が国でも知られている国際教育到達度評価学会(IEA=International Association for the Evaluation of Educational Achievement)では、1997年から第2回国際情報教育調査(SITES:Second Information Technology in Education Study:SITES)を実施している。これは1980年代から1990年代初めにかけて行われた「コンピュータと教育国際調査(COMPED)」のフォローアップとして、学校教育におけるコンピュータ等の情報技術の活用の実態について、各国を比較・分析することによって明らかにすることを目的に取り組んでいる調査であり、モジュール1(1997～1999年)、モジュール2(1999～2002年)、モジュール3(2002～2006年)という3つの研究期間・段階によって進めている。またモジュール2では、OECD(経済協力開発機構)の研究プロジェクト「情報コミュニケーション技術と学校教育の質」との連携により、調査が進められた。本書は、この調査において、学校教育におけるICTの活用についての先進的な事例を調査・収集し、比較・分析したモジュール2の成果を、我が国において広く普及するために、英文報告書""Robert B.Kozma(Ed.).(2003).Technology Innovation，and Educational Change-A Gloval Perspective-から、本調査に参加している我が国にとって特に重要と思われる部分について翻訳したものである。
