• Note (General): type:Article; The Nogami gyoji (festival) at the Nara Basin is an ag ricultural rite performed for fertility and rain in May or June in the period between cutting wheat and planting rice. Customary dishes at the festival have been abandoned for modern changes of taste in food or simplified for the financial burden upon a responsible family. This paper explores changes and characteristics of shinsen (offerings to the gods) and customary dishes at the Nogami gyoji by considering historical materials in the Edo period and notebooks of a woman who was responsible for the festival three times. The shinsen at the festival originated from rituals in the Meiji era. Its style is archaic but differs from the ancient one with no notable feature. On the other hand, as regards customary dishes, we can perceive regional differences between the northern part and the central and southern part of the Nara Basin as with differences in forms of the festival. This paper also discusses the reason why wakame are used in an interesting way.
