Note (General): 南木戸遺跡は日光川左岸の沖積微高地上に立地する古墳初頭を主体とする集落遺跡である。昭和37年の名神高速道路建設の際、河田方高架橋の敷設工事において廻間 I ～ II 式期に属する大量の土器と木製品が出土して遺跡の存在が知られるようになった（『一宮市史　資料編二』所収）。　今回の調査は、名神高速道路南側の側道にあたる市道256号線の下に水道管を埋設するための事前調査として、幅約3m、全長約70mの調査区を設定した。その結果、調査区の西寄りで幅がおよそ40mほどの微高地を確認した。さらに微高地の西半分にあたる約20mの範囲で、廻間 I 式期後半～ II 式期初頭に属する竪穴住居11棟と小型の掘立柱建物2棟、溝1条、土坑55基を検出した。集落はおよそ6期の変遷が認められる。うち特に1期は、居住域の西辺がL字に折れる幅4～5mの区画溝を確認した。2期～6期は調査区内でそれぞれ2～3棟の竪穴住居があり、その東には小型の掘立柱建物数棟と土坑群が集中して築かれている。　このほか、8世紀前半の竪穴住居2棟と溝1条・土坑67基、中世および近世の土坑が多数確認されている。
