Note (General): 大野原古墳群は、香川県の西端に位置する観音寺市大野原町大野原に所在する古墳時代後期～終末期に築造された古墳群である。そのうち椀貸塚古墳、平塚古墳、角塚古墳は昭和28年に香川県指定史跡となっており大野原三大古墳として広く知られている。これに岩倉塚古墳を加えて４基の大型横穴式石室墳が存在し、これらの築造年代とその順序は、椀貸塚（６世紀後葉）→岩倉塚（６世紀後葉）→平塚（７世紀初）→角塚（７世紀第二四半期）であり、各古墳が築造されたそれぞれの時期においては四国最大級の石室規模を誇っている。特筆すべきは、椀貸塚（円墳）の複室構造の横穴式石室の玄室規模は畿内中枢部の横穴式石室規模に準ずるものであること。また、この時期には珍しく墳丘周囲に二重周濠と周堤が配されており、周濠を含む墓域の直径は70mとなる。　平塚（円墳）は墳丘規模では香川県最大のもので、周濠を含めた墓域直径は66.7mであり、椀貸塚に準ずる規模である。　　　　　　　方墳である角塚は花崗岩を玄室の主たる石材と天井石のすべてに用いた巨石墳であり、同古墳群最後の大型横穴式石室墳である。今回の平成21年度から25年度までの範囲確認調査では、これまで未詳であった、横穴式石室の全長やその規模、形態、墳丘の直径、周濠等を含めた占有面積を確認することができ、遺跡の文化財的価値を再評価し、今後の保存・活用を図るための基本的な資料を得ることができたことが大きな成果と言える。
