Note (General): 花岡古町遺跡は、熊本県葦北郡芦北町大字花岡に所在する遺跡である。花岡古町遺跡の西には、佐敷川が西流し、その右岸に花岡古町遺跡、左岸に花岡木崎遺跡が位置する。佐敷には中世城が2城（佐敷城、東の城）存在する。花岡古町遺跡は、佐敷城に先行した東の城の城下町に相当する位置をとり、人吉往還の走向と同主軸をとる掘立柱建物等により構成される集落跡である。今次は、掘立柱建物群、墓葬及び土壙群、河川敷（低地）が展開する中世集落の縁辺部を調査した。併せて、竪穴建物3棟も調査され、集落と工房との位置関係を捉えている。なお、古代の自然流路から墨書土器、箆書土器が多量出土している。古代駅伝制に係る「佐色駅」木簡が出土した花岡木崎遺跡が近接しおり、芦北町佐敷の地が交通の要衝であったことが判明した。
