Note (General): 近世新発田城跡二ノ丸南側の重臣屋敷地(調査区①・②・③)及び二ノ丸堀(調査区④)の一部を調査した。調査区①・②付近は、絵図から江戸初期は新発田藩の家老職を務める家柄である溝口伊織家，江戸後期には窪田平兵衛家の屋敷地であったと考えられる。土坑・溝等の遺構を検出したものの，これらの屋敷に関連するものかは不明である。出土遺物は近世陶磁器が主体で，その中には新潟県では二例目となる鍋島焼の皿が確認できる。調査区②西側には土塁が巡っていたとみられるが，魔城後に削平・撞乱・整地を受けたため，痕跡を確認することはできなかった。調査区③では中ノ門の一部と見られる土坑や南北方向に延びる木柱列を検出した。木柱列は明治から昭和期に存続した陸軍衛戍病院と道の境界を示す土塁もしくは木柵の痕跡と推定される。調査区④からは堀の土留めと推定される杭列を検出した。出土遺物は，近世末期の肥前・瀬戸美濃産の陶磁器，瓦，木製品が主体である。
