本遺跡は、鹿乗川流域の沖積低地に立地する弥生時代後期～古墳時代前期の集落を主体とする遺跡である。自然堤防の頂部では、竪穴建物跡92基、掘立柱建物跡6基などを検出した。また、集落の南端では方形周溝墓3基とそれらを凌駕する墳丘墓1基があり、当該集落首長層の墓と推測される。そして、集落の北限と南限は鹿乗川の旧河道によって北の姫下遺跡、南の下懸遺跡と区切られ、旧河道からは建築部材などの木製品が多数出土している。そして北限の旧河道左岸ではくり抜き井戸側が検出され、姫下遺跡の範囲に相当するとみられる。一方南限の旧河道左岸は下懸遺跡の集落範囲に相当し、古墳時代初頭の土器が多量に出土している。なお、集落内の竪穴建物跡からは赤色顔料の付着した鉢形土器が多く出土し、集落内での祭祀などに使用されたものと考えられる。
