Note (General): 荒井南遺跡は、標高3.1～4.7ｍの自然堤防から後背湿地にかけて立地する。　平成24年度の土地区画整理事業に伴う試掘確認調査では、弥生時代の津波堆積物と考えられる砂層に覆われた水田跡が確認された。　平成25年度の本発掘調査では、水田跡を覆う砂層は津波堆積物と判断され、水田跡に伴って弥生時代中期中葉の中在家南式期の弥生土器等が出土した。　本遺跡は北東方向約600ｍに位置する沓形遺跡と同様に、約2,000年前の津波によって廃絶した弥生時代中期中葉の食糧生産域であったことが明らかとなった。
