Note (General): 中郡遺跡群は，旧石器時代〜近世にかけての複合遺跡である。特に中世では，島津氏初代忠久の居館跡とされる「屋地の館跡」に比定される遺跡である。発掘調査では，旧石器〜近世にかけての遺構・遺物が検出された。　旧石器時代は，石器製作の痕跡が認められないことから，短期間の猟場として，何度かこの地が利用されたと思われる。縄文時代は，早期を中心とする土器が認められ，主に八代海沿岸や中九州地域に分布圏を持つ中原式土器や押型文土器群で構成される。また，集石遺構や土坑，落とし穴状遺構が検出されている。　弥生・古墳時代では，在地土器のほか，肥後地域の弥生終末期土器や古式土師器が出土している。古代では，土師器の甕・坏・埦が一括して埋納された土坑が出土している。また，在地系の土師器・須恵器のほかに畿内系の楠葉型黒色土器や瓦等が出土している。　中世では，堀跡や掘立柱建物跡，竪穴建物跡等の遺構が検出されている。出土した貿易陶磁器の中には，青白磁の龍首水注等の稀少な資料もあり，遺構を含めて，本遺跡の性格を示す重要な成果品として注目される。また，低湿地で，杭列が検出され，木製品も多く出土している。　近世では，溝状遺構等が検出され，肥前系等の陶磁器類が出土している。
