Note (General): 今宿五郎江遺跡は、糸島平野を画する長垂山塊の西麓に拡がる狭長な今宿平野東部の低丘陵上に立地する。本調査区は、この低丘陵のほぼ中央部に位置している。発掘調査では、弥生時代の堀立柱建物群と土壙、溝を検出した。このうち幅が４ｍの溝は、弥生時代中期末～後期前半のもので、弥生土器や石器などがコンテナ300箱出土した。この溝は、東隣の第５次調査区の溝や西隣の第２次調査区の溝と繋がり、今宿五郎江遺跡が立地する低丘陵を南北に二分するように東西に流れている。この溝の東には低丘陵の外縁に沿うようにして流れる大溝があり、その溝は南へ下って湾曲し、更に西へ続く環濠をなしている。また、本調査区の北東にある第１次調査区では環濠の一部が検出されている。この南北両台地には、堀立柱建物群が拡がっているが、その在り方は小規模な環濠のある北台地を二分する本調査区の溝との繋がりを明らかにすることが、今宿五郎江遺跡の環濠集落の消長を明らかにすることになり、北台地の遺跡の拡がりを知ることが望まれる。
