Note (General): 本遺跡周辺には，古代から中～近世の遺跡が数多く分布する。これら「盛南地区遺跡群」は，平安時代初頭の延暦22 年（803）に，政府が造営した古代城柵「志波城」の南東方に位置する。これまでの発掘調査で，７世紀から10 世紀頃まで「志波蝦夷（エミシ）」が拠点とした古代集落群や，中～近世の居館跡，集落跡等が確認されている。　向中野幅遺跡は，盛南地区遺跡群の南東端に位置し，古代集落や近世のため池跡（道明堤）があったと考えられている。　本調査において，近世のため池跡とされていた湿地帯は，縄文時代以降現代まで，狩場や農地などとして使われてきた場所と考えられる成果が上がった。
